Dagon was an important deity in various Mesopotamian mythologies, where he was seen as patron of fertility and agriculture.

Dagon, and several of his worshippers, were seen as enemies for the ancient Israelites and their God, who created the universe. Later Christians often saw Dagon as a demon, one of the fallen angel who rebelled with Lucifer during the dawn of time and became an idol of the heathen world.
